Just the other day
I was speaking to my friend about what the best gift we have ever received was.
I am sure we have all received a gift that may have changed our lives in some
way or another, for instance that play doctor set that fueled your desire to
study medicine... or that book that just had a profound effect on your life.
For me, I’d say one
of my favorite gifts was a classical guitar. I had always been interested in
music, having taken piano lessons when I was in grade 1 but somehow over the
years I had stopped putting in effort in my musical education. I still
participated in choirs and dreamed of being able to play more than “Mary had a little
lamb” on the piano but I didn't have the drive to take up an instrument.
Until after
spending numerous holidays, watching Youtube covers of songs, did I finally
decide to take up a new instrument: the guitar.
My dad bought me my first guitar just before I
turned 16, and I do apologize If I sound dramatic like is some E! True Hollywood
Story episode... But my life really did change. I finally found an escape from
the stress of school and growing up. I finally felt like I had found a new best
friend. It was like that new pet you get for Christmas: you cherish it like it
is your child.
A song that
perfectly sums up my relationship with my guitar, Valencia, is: "My Guitar" by A South
African musician by the name of Zahara.
“Cause when they’re
gone, I’ll have my guitar...”
“I’ll find it home,
where I left it sitting here waiting for me”
