Popcorn Bites: Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) (*Minor Spoilers*)

Directed by: Timur Bekmambetov

Starring: Benjamin Walker, Rufus Sewell and Dominic Cooper

Genre: Action, Fantasy, Horror

IMBD Synopsis: Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, discovers vampires are planning to take over the United States. He makes it his mission to eliminate them.

My Rating: 6/10

My Comment: I have never seen a history portrayal quite like this one. The took one of America's most poular presidents and made him a vampire hunter. The story line was really good and the effects were also super good. The pacing on the other hand was very slow. This is the type of movie that you have to at least just see once.

Fit Thursday: Extreme Shed and Shred Review

I briefly hit pause on Insanity to try out this workout from one of my favourite trainers (and idols) Jillian Michaels. This programme was fantastic, it combined strength and cardio, and it included a warm-up and a cool down. Just like Body Revolution I swore a lot during these workouts. Its challenging while you're doing them but at the end you feel good, strong and confident.

The programme consists of a variety of things: resistance training, calisthenics, martial arts and even yoga. I was never bored while doing this programme. And you will definitely be sore, especially in your arms since there is a lot of push-ups and planks involved.

I didn't necessarily lose weight on this programme but I did start noticing more definition in my arms.

Popcorn Bites: The Shawshank Redemption (1994) **Spoilers**

Directed by: Frank Darabont

Starring: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman and Bob Gunton

Genre:  Crime, Drama

IMBD Synopsis: Andy Dufresne is a young and successful banker whose life changes drastically when he is convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife and her lover. Set in the 1940's, the film shows how Andy, with the help of his friend Red, the prison entrepreneur, turns out to be a most unconventional prisoner.

My rating: 10/10!!!!

My Comment: Wow :O! That was a brilliant movie. Best movie that I've ever seen in my entire life. This movie is full of inspiration and hope. It gives you an idea of how things were back then in prisons (not sure if that still happens). I don't usually lean towards movies like this but I actually sat throughout the entire 2 and a half hours with no breaks and my eyes glued to the screen. I bawled my eyes out in the scene where Brooks was released because of he's health till the part when he hung himself. Also loved the way that Andy changed the prison so much yet he managed to escape in the end. If you feel like a really good movie with a great plot and inspirational story line then rent this movie right now!

My Rating: 8/10

My Comment: I was so excited to read this book, that i just purchased the kindle version. I wanted to wait till I buy a copy (since I'm collecting all of Jodi Picoult books). This book reminded me a lot the TV show Once Upon a Time (which I absolutly love). I really did enjoy this novel. I really hope that Samantha gets into writing like her mother. The style of writing was new and fresh. I also really loved the ending and the pictures involved. The beginning of each chapter was also artistically done. This is the perfect novel if you just want a light and quick read.

Popcorn Bites: Apartment 143 (2011) :) No Spoilers :)

Directed by: Carles Torrens

Starring: Kai Lennox, Gia Mantegna and Michael O'Keefe

Genre: Horror, Thriller

IMBD Synopsis: A parapsychologist team are asked to investigate Apartment 143. The White family, who have lost their wife/mother in a car crash, have been experiencing strange things since they moved in to the apartment. But, they were also experiencing things at their old place. After the team set up their equipment, they get some compelling evidence on camera.

My Rating: 3/10

My Comment: WTF did I just watch? The movie is like the paranormal activity movies, but this movie does have a lot more action. Maybe I wasn't following the movie but I was so confused. The storyline made absolutely no sense. Yes the movie was scary in some parts but I didn't like it. Whatever happened to great horror movies such as ''The Grudge'' or ''Friday the 13th".

Popcorn Bites: The Iron Lady (2011) :)Spoiler Free:)

Directed by: Phyllida Lloyd

Starring: Meryl Streep, Jim Broadbent and Richard E. Grant

Genre: Biography, Drama, History

IMBD Synopsis: Elderly and a virtual prisoner in her own home due to her concerned staff and daughter Carol, Margaret Thatcher, Britain's first woman prime minister, looks back on her life as she clears out her late husband Denis's clothes for the Oxfam shop. Denis is seen as being her rock as she first enters parliament and then runs for the leadership of the Conservative Party, culminating in her eventual premiereship. Now his ghost joins her to comment on her successes and failures, sometimes to her annoyance, generally to her comfort until ultimately, as the clothes are sent to the charity shop, Denis departs from Margret's life forever.

My rating: 6.5/10

My Comment: I vaguely learnt about Margaret Thatcher in High School. I love history movies about powerful women. This movie is inspiring, and made me understand her better. Make-up and costumes were fantastic and convincing. Meryl Streep actually did look like Margaret Thatcher. The only criticism that I have for this movie was that there were too many flashbacks which kind of got me confused at some points.

It's Smoothie Time- Part 2

It’s Smoothie Time Part 2
I will be honest with you: most of the time when I make things, whether it may be a smoothie or a meal, I do not strictly adhere to a recipe. I use whatever I find in the house, and I just throw a few things together in hopes that it will taste good. This “recipe” I am about to share with you is probably nothing new, but it was made on a whim. Really.

Ingredients
·         Chopped apples( I used about 4 in this smoothie)
·         A cup of low fat milk
·         A cup of low-fat strawberry yoghurt
·         3 tablespoons of smooth peanut butter
·         ½ chopped pineapple
·         2 chopped bananas

Method
Place the ingredients in a blender
Blend until smooth
Place smoothie in the refrigerator until it is chilled
Serve!

I promise to add in photos next time. For now you will just have to rely on your imagination ;)

Popcorn Bites: Smiley (2012) **Spoilers**

Directed by: Michael J. Gallagher
Starring: Caitlin Gerard, Melanie Papalia and Shane Dawson
Genre: Horror
IMBD Synopsis: After discovering an urban legend of a demented serial killer, who has nothing but a carved 'smiley' on his face, a mentally fragile teen must decide whether she is going insane - or will be the next victim.
My rating: 4/10
My Comment: Have you ever been so excited to see a movie and then when you finally do watch it you think to yourself: what the fuck did I just watch? Well this is half true when I first watched Smiley, and ironically I watched this movie three times. The first time I watched it with my sister because we are both HUGE Shane Dawson fans. Some parts did scare me and freak me out. The second and third times was with my friends and that's when I started noticing editing mistakes. The story line goes nowhere, they could've cut out a lot of the "classroom" scenes to explain the story of Smiley more (like why he got like this and why he does this). The second thing I didn't like about this movie was how annoying the lead actress is. Her acting was not convincing at all! Watch this movie ''for the lulz'' with your friends if you want a scary movie for your sleepover.

10 Songs on My playlist in 2012

My Favorite Songs of 2012

What a year 2012 has been. In between hurricane Sandy, the 2012 Olympics and who can forget President Barack Obama being re-elected into office, 2012 has produced some pretty amazing songs (even the annoying can't- get- out-of-your-head catchy ones)

Okay, I know the New Year has not arrived yet but still... It is never too early to reflect on the crazy year 2012 has been! In between school, family and friends and just “Life happening”, one thing that keeps me sane during the madness is music.

So my dear Little Women, here is my list of songs that has been with through the laughs, and tears.

1)      Some Nights - Fun
2)      We Are Young – Fun ft. Janelle Monae
3)      Wide Awake- Katy Perry
4)      Somebody that I used to Know- Gotye ft. Kimbra
5)      Dark Side- Kelly Clarkson
6)      Little things- One Direction
7)      Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys ft. Nicki Minaj
8)      Try- P!nk
9)      Hall of Fame – The Script ft. Will. I. Am.
10)  Skyfall – Adele

Popcorn Bites: Rock of Ages (2012) :)No Spoilers:)

Directed by: Adam Shankman

Starring: Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta and Tom Cruise

Genre: Comedy, Drama, Musical

IMBD Synopsis: Set in 1987 Los Angeles, Drew and Sherrie are two young people chasing their dreams in the big city. When they meet, it's love at first sight, though their romance will face a series of challenges.

My Rating: 8/10

My Comment: One thing that you have to know about me is that I can listen to any type of music (except metal) but on a daily basis I listen to rock. There is just something about music with real instruments that really hits home. the difference between rock compared to other music is that the lyrics mean something, they are real feelings. I was so excited when I first saw the trailer for this movie, I got so excited. Finally a musical movie that is not a cliche, (even though I love musicals like Chicago) this movie was different. I think that this movie was underrated, the covers were really good and for a non-singer Tom Cruise actually did a great job. The only thing that I didn't like about it was Julianne Hough's singing. Don't get me wrong, she has a spectacular voice, just not for rock, she should stick to country. :)

Perfect Conditions

Perfect Conditions

If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done- Ecclesiastes 11:4
It was finally the day I had been waiting for: university applications.
The time in my academic career where I would finally decide where I would spend the next four years of my life arrived. I had taken the 4-hour long career tests, online quizzes, spent evenings Googling the courses I wanted to take and of course attending every single stall at the career expos my school hosted.

I had visited each and every stall at the career expo; spoken to every representative I could speak to, collected as many pamphlets as my hands could carry, every application form I could get and who can forget the free pens that I got?

I was ready to embark on this new journey, and I was excited to start filling out application forms. I knew exactly where I wanted to be and what I wanted to do with my life. I had found the perfect school to follow my dream of becoming a journalist.

So as the grade 11 final exams arrived, we were constantly being reminded of the importance of these exams as these would be the results that would be used to apply to university. So I decided to put in a lot of effort into the exams to achieve the perfect score of over 40 points. The points would guarantee me admission to the school.

But sometimes with all goals, you don’t achieve them the first time. I fell short of the 40 point target (although my exam results were not terrible). They were still not where I wanted them to be. Although the university had said they might consider applicants who fall below the 40-points, 40-points and above would most LIKELY guarantee admission. I wanted guaranteed admission.  I did not want to be less than perfect.
What if they did not accept me?

So I decided to work even harder next year to achieve the 40-points required. And I still failed to meet the target after writing midterms AND Finals.  I did not do any better than my previous exam; in fact my grades remained the same.
I decided to go ahead and apply to my dream school, with the grades I got and hopefully sweep them away with my charm (I’m kidding).

I realized that maybe my academics were not the only deciding factor: I had been involved in extracurricular activities in and out of school, I had no criminal record (and other things I suppose schools look for).

The only problem is I had applied a tad bit too late. My application had been sent to the university just before the deadlines, so technically it was not a” late” application.

And less than a week later they sent me a letter.  And my heart sank when my application had been rejected: they were full. On the bright side they had placed me on waiting list for 2012 and offered me a place in 2014, a year after my peers would be entering varsity (Which reassured me that I am not as dumb as I think).

But what disappointed me is that I had waited so long to apply. I waited to get that “perfect” score (which I never attained), instead of using those okay grade 11 results from the start. So my waiting may have been in vain? It still plagues me: if only I had gone with my gut and used the first set of results instead of being such a damn perfectionist!

What the whole point of this sad tale? To illustrate the devastating effects procrastination and perfection can have. I am not encouraging laziness, all I am saying is sometimes our compulsive need to be perfect and avoid failure can hinder our progress.

Try. Yes, like Pink put: “You better get up and try”. No matter how “imperfect” you may feel, if you don’t try you may be missing out on an opportunity.

There will never be the “perfect” time to do anything. Although I am still bummed out about being placed on waiting list, I have taken something out of this experience. In the end it is not only your grades that determine your success in life: it is trying out things and eradicating the fear of failure. In other words it is : " diving in", or getting up on that stage risking being ridiculed.

Or as Robert Schuller put it: " What would you attempt to do If you knew you could not fail?"

Popcorn Bites: The Change-up (2011) *Minor Spoilers*

Directed by: David Dobkin

Starring: Jason Bateman, Ryan Reynolds, Olivia Wilde

Genre: Comedy

IMBD Synopsis: Growing up together, Mitch (Ryan Reynolds) and Dave (Jason Bateman) were inseparable best friends, but as the years have passed they've slowly drifted apart. While Dave is an overworked lawyer, husband and father of three, Mitch has remained a single, quasi-employed man-child who has never met a responsibility he liked. To Mitch, Dave has it all: beautiful wife Jamie (Leslie Mann), kids who adore him and a high-paying job at a prestigious law firm. To Dave, living Mitch's stress-free life without obligation or consequence would be a dream come true. Following a drunken night out together, Mitch and Dave's worlds are turned upside down when they wake up in each other's bodies and proceed to freak out. Despite the freedom from their normal routines and habits, the guys soon discover that each other's lives are nowhere near as rosy as they once seemed. Further complicating matters are Dave's sexy legal associate...

My rating: 4/10

My Comment: To be honest, the only reason why I watched this movie was because of Ryan Reynolds. He is my second celebrity crush, behind Channing Tatum. This movie was too similar to freaky friday. Which, in my books, can never be replaced.

And once the betrayal is complete, Sophia and Ava find themselves knee-deep in a scandal that could take away everything they care about, including the one thing that matters most-each other.
My Rating: 6/10
My Comment: I enjoy watching Elle and Blair on YouTube (AllThatGlitters21 and Juicystar07). So when I heard that they had published a book, I decided to sink my teeth into it and see what it was about. My must admit when I first started the novel it felt a bit pre-teen-ish to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing since they do have many preteen viewers. Past half way was when I was really getting into the book. I love that they put their LonDO's and LonDon'ts at the end of each chapter. Overall it is yet another great read for the summer.

My Rating: 7/10

My Comment: I am a huge Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth fan. So to me, this movie was the real deal. The writing and the costumes was well done and amazing. Story line was a bit hard to follow and the movie did drag a bit, but it's worth it.

Popcorn Bites: Seeking a Friend for the End of the World (2012) **Spoilers**

One man decides to spend his time searching for his long lost love from high school during the coming catastrophe.

My Rating: 7/10

My Comment: Before I saw this movie I thought it was going to be a comedy because of Steve Carell. This movie was something different, it's not your usual chick flick but somehow it was still so romantic. Especially when he sent Penny off to spend her final hours with her family, that part made me cry so much. I loved the end, when she came back for him. one, two , three... AWWWWW!! He died with his sweetheart in his arms!! Anyways * wiping away the tears*. On a personal note, I dont believe that they world will end soon, I think we still have a couple of thousand years. :). It's Smoothie time!

One of my most fondest memories of the summer was when every Saturday morning my dad would declare " It's Smoothie time!". My sisters, mom and I would all stop what we were doing and rush to get our smoothies, which would be served in wine glasses.

We had just bought a new blender, and every weekend was informally declared " Smoothie time".

My dad always made the best smoothies( and he still does, though less frequently) combining all sorts of vegetables, fruits, herbs... Basically anything he could find!

So I thought I would give smoothie making a try, and post my very own  recipe here!

Apple- Carrot Smoothie
  • 3-4 chopped carrots
  • 1 large banana
  • 2 chopped apples( with the skin)
  • 1 cup of fat-free plain yogurt
  • 1 cup of low-fat milk
  • 1 cup off chopped pineapples
Method:

  1. Place the ingredients in the blender ( I usually blend the apples and carrots first)
  2. Blend the rest of the ingredients until smooth
  3. Place the smoothie in the refrigerator until it has cooled down
  4. Serve!
I will be sure to post more smoothie recipes as I experiment!
" All Great things are simple, and many can be expressed in single words: Freedom, Justice, Honor, Duty, Mercy, Hope, Smoothies"

Popcorn Bites: Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (2011) *Minor Spoilers*

However they escape and Manny plots a plan to steal Captain Gutt's ship and return to his homeland in a dangerous voyage through the sea. But the cruel pirates seek revenge against Manny and his family and friends.

My Rating: 8/10

My Comment: I absolutely love every single one of the Ice Age movies. Animation movies are my guilty pleasures, there is just something so innocent about them. This Ice Age Movie was so adorable, especially those little chipmunks. This movie was a star-studded cast, even Nicki Minaj was in it. I love that Diego found a love interest, now we just need one for Sid :P. I hope they make a 5th one. They never get boring.
